SUMMARY:The Lucky Losers
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for ROAD WARRIOR in 2022 & winners of FIVE Independent Blues Awards in 2021 (including “Artist of the Year” – Cathy Lemons\, “Song of the Year” Godless Land“)\, The Lucky Losers are San Francisco’s finest male/female duet fronted 5-piece band — a throwback to the hybrid of soul\, blues\, rock\, gospel\, and country that emerged in the late 1960’s with impassioned vocal performances\, electrifying musical interplay\, and powerful harmonica. \nDescribed as “the finest light-skinned female blues vocalist in the U.S” [Real Blues – 2010]\, fiery Dallas-born entertainer Cathy Lemons has a velvet voice with a gritty edge and the rebel conviction of a woman risen from the ashes. New Jersey native Phil Berkowitz “has earned renown as one of the West Coast’s most distinctive harp players\, as well as for his sharp\, resonant tenor” [Living Blues – 2018]. The stark contrast between incandescent Lemons and elegant Berkowitz makes for a captivating musical union\, breathing new life into American songwriting tradition and the vanishing art of duet singing.

SUMMARY:Stephanie Schneiderman
DESCRIPTION:Trying to pin down Stephanie Schneiderman to any one genre\, talent or discipline is next to impossible. One thing is clear – whether pursuing her prolific work as a solo artist\, playing drums for all star roots pop act Swan Sovereign (Dirty Martini)\, producing\, acting\, or giving back\, Schneiderman is hands down one of the most diverse and hardest working female singer-songwriters the Pacific Northwest has to offer. \nBlending elements of folk\, indie pop music\, Americana and electronic music\, her songwriting is often compared to artists like Imogen Heap\, Regina Spektor and Jem. As a singer-songwriter\, her solo career began with a coveted spot in the Lilith Fair. From there\, she went on to receive extensive NW radio play\, tour internationally\, and earn music placements in numerous films and primetime TV shows\, including Felicity\, the Vampire Diaries Soundtrack and many more. She has played with some of the nation’s top touring acts- from Aimee Mann to Hall & Oates\, Heart\, and Train- and enjoyed ongoing success with popular NW all-female groups Dirty Martini and Swan Sovereign.

SUMMARY:Ben Rice Band
DESCRIPTION:We enjoyed him so much last time\, we knew we had to have him back. \nBen’s original music blends Soul\, Delta-Blues\, Rockabilly\, Jazz\, and Funk into a Roots Stew. Influenced heavily by his parents record collection\, from Al Green to Alice Cooper\, Teddy Pendergrass to Marshall Tucker\, at a young age Ben began investigating Blues and it’s history. Starting with B.B. King and going through the various regions and time periods\, he is inspired and influenced by historical figures like Muddy Waters\, Mississippi Fred McDowell\, Robert Johnson\, Big Bill Broonzy\, and Skip James to name a few. Ben spent his college years studying Jazz Guitar at the University of Oregon as well as classical music while also playing in the Celtic Folk ensemble and Mariachi group on campus. He is well versed in a lot of musical styles that all contribute to the unique sound of his originals. \n

SUMMARY:Jake Blount
DESCRIPTION:A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music\, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle\, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blount’s new album\, The New Faith\, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23\, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music\, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine\, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. Jake Blount’s music is rooted in care and confrontation. On stage\, each song he and his band play is chosen for a reason – because it highlights important elements about the stories we tell ourselves of our shared history and our endlessly complicated present moment. The more we learn about where we’ve been\, the better equipped we are to face the future.

SUMMARY:Ben Sollee
DESCRIPTION:Over the last two decades\, Kentuckian Ben Sollee has distinguished himself as multi-faceted creative\, blurring the lines between music\, tech\, and experiential design. As a cellist\, songwriter\, and storyteller he has toured the globe\, sometimes by bicycle\, performing his original music. As a composer he has created music for stage\, screen\, and virtual reality apps earning an Emmy Award for his 2018 score for Base Ballet. As a producer\, he has curated hundreds of live events including experiences for the Speed Art Museum and Lincoln Center. Throughout it all\, he has continued to advocate for people and the land by creating and curating experiences that grow a greater sense of togetherness. \nSollee’s body of work bears this out. His latest record Kentucky Native\, blends traditional bluegrass with influences from Kentucky’s latest immigrant population. In the 2010\, Sollee teamed up with songwriter Daniel Martin Moore and My Morning Jacket’s Jim James to create Dear Companion\, a record raising awareness about the devastating practice of mountain top removal strip mining in Appalachia.

SUMMARY:Laurie Lewis & The Right Hands (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:To ask how Laurie Lewis’s music is relevant in this day and age\, in the broader folk\, Americana\, and bluegrass scenes as a whole\, would be similar to asking how a brick in a home’s foundation is relevant to its structure. Her influence\, her reach and her artistic intent are quiet stalwarts on which so much has been built. \nJustin Hiltner\, Bluegrass Situation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor nearly four decades\, Laurie Lewis has gathered fans and honors for her powerful and emotive voice and her versatile\, dynamic songwriting. She is a sought-after recording producer and an equally skilled teacher and mentor. \n\n\nAnd she is an inspiration and a ground-breaker – across genres\, across geography and across gender barriers.

SUMMARY:Fellow Pynins
DESCRIPTION:Fellow Pynins is a Portland\, Oregon based award winning contemporary folk duo with a keen and bucolic sense of vocal harmony and song craft anchored in the balladry tradition. The duo consists of Dani Aubert (claw-hammer banjo\, bouzouki) and solo artist Ian George (guitar\, mandolin).  They are songwriters\, collectors\, and interpreters. Since 2016 the duo has toured the US incessantly and has gathered significant traction in the UK/Ireland\, gracing festivals such as Cambridge Folk Festival\, Wilderness Festival\, Omagh Bluegrass Festival\, and selling out legs of their most recent UK/Ireland tour.  In 2019 they were named by NPR’s Bob Boilen as one of the best Tiny Desk submissions and the same year won the Minnesota Bluegrass & Old-Time duet competition.  In 2020/2021 the duo relocated from Minneapolis\, MN back to Oregon to build (learning every step of the way) two tiny houses on wheels for their family\, which they now live in.\n“Fellow Pynins will transport you into their haunting and beguiling world of love tales and spine-tingling harmonies… They’ll have you traveling far and wide to hear them again.” – Lisa Dunn (BBC)  \n“Fascinating stuff!”-Frank Hennessy\, BBC Radio Wales \n\n“Spellbinding”-Country Music People

SUMMARY:Summer Dean
DESCRIPTION:If you want to say you say her before she got BIG – this is your chance! \nSummer Dean makes music rooted in Telecaster twang\, southern storytelling\, and the rugged resilience of the American West\, it’s the sound of a lifelong Texan whose songs evoke her tough\, independent spirit. Her full-length debut album Bad Romantic struts out of the speakers\, but also finds moments of tenderness and vulnerability. \n“I taught elementary school for 10 years\,” she says. “That’s what small-town Texas girls do. We teach school\, work at the bank\, or at the courthouse. Then we get married and have babies and a few dogs and die happy\, buried next to our husbands. But here I am\, age 40\, quitting my stable job\, cashing in the wedding money my momma put aside for me\, and making this album.” \nDuring the years leading up to Bad Romantic‘s 2021 release\, Dean built her audience on the road. She played bars and dancehalls\, booking every show herself\, mixing her songs with comedic banter and western wit. Dean’s ability to spin a yarn and engage with her audience during live shows with wit and humor comes out in spades on Bad Romantic.

SUMMARY:Stash Wyslouch
DESCRIPTION:This is one for the more musically adventurous…like if Frank Zappa played acoustic music.  But look at what his fellow musicians have to say: \n“Stash and his band have really broken musical boundaries by doing things that just don’t seem possible on acoustic instruments.” – Billy Strings \n “A brilliant and Free-thinking Mind” – Chris Eldridge (The Punch Brothers) \n“Heavy acoustic laced with musical cosmology” – Tony Trischka \nPolish-Colombian Stash Wyslouch is an avant-garde Bluegrass guitarist\, singer and songwriter. His music delights in story-telling\, improvisation and outer-space worthy composition. Despite his Heavy-Metal beginnings in middle and high school\, Bluegrass music has been central to Wyslouch’s life for the past 15 years touring and recording with groups such as The Deadly Gentlemen\, Bruce Molsky’s Mountain Drifters\, The Jacob Jolliff Band\, and Tony Trischka’s Early Roman Kings. \n \n

SUMMARY:Special Consensus w/ Jeff Plankenhorn
DESCRIPTION:The Special Consensus is a bluegrass band that has achieved a contemporary sound in their four decades of performing\, making their music a modern classic. Band leader and founder Greg Cahill is a recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Achievement Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and was inducted into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) Hall of Greats. Special Consensus has released 20 band recordings and received six awards from the IBMA and two Grammy nominations. \nSpecial Consensus’ sound is grounded in a deep appreciation and understanding of bluegrass music; the infectious band sound reminds people of the past while utilizing the innovations of today.  With the foundation of Greg’s unique banjo playing style\, Greg Blake (guitar)\, Dan Eubanks (bass) and Michael Prewitt (mandolin) effortlessly support each other and consistently maintain their bluegrass center whether they’re playing a jazz-tinged instrumental or a song from any of their award-winning recordings. These four talented vocalists and instrumentalists follow their creative desires without straying too far from their roots. \nJUST ADDED:  Opening the show is Austin-based guitar / dobro master Jeff Plankenhorn.  What a great night! \n \n \n

SUMMARY:The Silos w/ Buttercup
DESCRIPTION:The Silos\, the still-kicking band Walter Salas-Humara co-founded in New York’s post-punk ‘80s scene played Alt-Rock\, Alt-Country\, and Americana before any critics coined those terms. They were named Best New Artist in the 1987 Rolling Stone Critics Poll. Throughout Salas-Humara’s career his voice has remained textured like a walnut; meanwhile\, his narratives focus not on interior\, abstract weaves of doubts and anxieties but on storytelling. He renders small incidents in granular detail that take on the weight of attentive\, convincing poetry and wry wordplay. Each tune is marked by such humanity\, which offers much refuge in a convulsive time. \nButtercup is a life-affirming art-rock band from Texas that has written hundreds of original songs that NPR calls “jangly art rock for the left side of the brain.”  Since 2004\, the band has released 8 full length recordings and a DVD documentary.  Their special blend of creative performances that incoporates visual art\, performance art and installation has led their fan base\, the “Buttercult”\, to expect the unexpected.

SUMMARY:Big Sandy and his Fly-Right Boys
DESCRIPTION:Over the last three decades\, Big Sandy and his Fly Rite Boys have kept up a constant cycle of traveling back and forth across the lower 48\, then hopping across the pond to Europe and beyond. They bring with them a brand of American music that has earned them an induction into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame\, several national television appearances\, guest spots on The Grand Ole Opry\, and a slew of adoring fans. I truly love being out on the road\, and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to sing my songs all over the world\, said Sandy. But when I’m away from the U.S. for too long\, it’s like I need a recharge… like I need a solid dose of everything Americana. Give me a Chuck Berry song while rolling down the interstate\, or a truck stop conversation with a waitress who once danced with Lefty Frizzell\, and I’m good for another three thousand miles . \n \n

SUMMARY:Ian Moore Band
DESCRIPTION:The word “legend” is showing up more and more in concert introductions and interviews\, but the reference makes Ian uncomfortable. Yeah\, he’s proud of playing stadiums with the Stones\, arenas with Dylan and ZZ Top\, showing up in movies like Slingblade\, and having numerous radio hits and tv performances.  The awards are affirming and exciting; the records are an ambitious list\, with a who’s who of producers and players. But it’s the soul that he’s chasing. \nIan would rather talk about the colors and sounds of the records\, the connection with fans\, and of spirit. He plays shows like they are the last thing he will ever do\, and though he is known for his skills as a singer\, guitarist\, and songwriter\, the ferocity and spirit are his stock-in-trade. When Ian plays\, he doesn’t do it to show his ability. He plays to create a communion with his audience. When he sings\, he is seeking a connection- to elevate and heal. When he writes\, his songs dance with the darkness\, but always hold the promise of redemption and light. \nAnd…we are THRILLED he is playing Brewminatti as one of the 3 Northwest shows on this run. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0Fy6O9wtOI

SUMMARY:Kaitlin Butts
DESCRIPTION:Full of reflection\, daydreaming contemplation\, sharp wit\, tough decisions in the midst of dire situations\, rosy love\, and beaming growth\, What Else Can She Do finds Country music’s Kaitlin Butts in full bloom. Behind her flowing locks of auburn hair\, Oklahoma twang\, and a wry grin\, grows a devastating storyteller and an equally demanding\, radiant voice. \nFollowing up her charming debut Same Hell\, Different Devil and a diverse run of singles–the cosmic dancer “Marfa Lights\,” the haunting murder ballad “White River\,” the sweet tranquility of “How Lucky Am I\,” and the enigmatic disco fever dream “White River (Remix)–What Else Can She Do has Butts delivering a collection of delicate\, strong\, and gallant characters and transformative storytellers. \nWhat Else Can She Do is a visceral display of just how raw and mighty words and actions can be–and how sometimes\, knowing when to walk away can be just as compelling as holding on. Inspired by the resilience and humility displayed by the women in her life\, Butts’ latest is a welcoming nod and saving grace. Time and again\, she demands to be seen and heard as an artist\, storyteller\, and woman. \n \n

SUMMARY:Ordinary Elephant
DESCRIPTION:“…one of the best Americana albums of the year.”  Associated Press \n“…easily one of the best folk duo records I have heard in years.”  Pop Matters \nInternational Folk Music Awards 2017 Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant captivates audiences with their emotionally powerful and vulnerable songs\, letting the listener know that they are not alone in this world. The collaboration of husband and wife Pete and Crystal Damore\, their connection\, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch\, Guy Clark\, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. “Two become one\, in song…hand-in-glove harmonies surprise the listener with focused intensity and musical mastery\,” says Mary Gauthier. The Associated Press is calling their latest album\, Honest\, “one of the best Americana albums of the year.”

SUMMARY:Korby Lenker
DESCRIPTION:Korby Lenker is a roots-music Renaissance man…and one of our favorite repeat performers.  A prolific songwriter for more than two decades\, he’s spent his entire adulthood in a creative whirl\, juggling multiple roles — solo artist\, road warrior\, published author\, actor\, screenwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and storyteller — along the way.  His most recent and 8th album was named on American Songwriter’s list of Best Albums of 2021.  Here’s Korby with another of our favorites…
