SUMMARY:The Slocan Ramblers
DESCRIPTION:“If you’ve grown tired of the same old sounds\, here’s a band who reinvents a genre.” \n– Bluegrass Unlimited \nThe Slocan Ramblers (2020 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year Award Winner & 2019 Juno Award Nominee) are Canada’s bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in tradition\, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold\, dynamic sound\, The Slocans have become a leading light of today’s acoustic music scene. With a reputation for energetic live shows\, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan\, The Slocans have been winning over audiences from Merlefest to RockyGrass and everywhere in between. \nOn their new album Up the Hill and Through the Fog\, the all-star Canadian roots ensemble channels the past two years of loss into a surprisingly joyous collection of twelve songs intended to uplift and help make sense of the world. Bluegrass music is nothing short of catharsis for The Slocan Ramblers.

SUMMARY:Ordinary Elephant
DESCRIPTION:“…one of the best Americana albums of the year.”  Associated Press \n“…easily one of the best folk duo records I have heard in years.”  Pop Matters \nInternational Folk Music Awards 2017 Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant captivates audiences with their emotionally powerful and vulnerable songs\, letting the listener know that they are not alone in this world. The collaboration of husband and wife Pete and Crystal Damore\, their connection\, and their influences (such as Gillian Welch\, Guy Clark\, Anais Mitchell) all meet on stage. “Two become one\, in song…hand-in-glove harmonies surprise the listener with focused intensity and musical mastery\,” says Mary Gauthier. The Associated Press is calling their latest album\, Honest\, “one of the best Americana albums of the year.”

SUMMARY:Jordan Tice AND Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves
DESCRIPTION:There are some shows that might just be TOO GOOD to handle.  This is one of those shows.  Check it: \nJordan Tice is a singer/songwriter who combines witty musings on life\, relationships\, and time with deft finger-picking acoustic guitar skills. On his 5th record\, Motivational Speakeasy\, he Breaks it down to just his voice and acoustic guitar for a collection of music that is while deeply informed by the rich history of American folk music\, forward-thinking and modern in its conceit. Produced by Kenneth Pattengale (of The Milk Carton Kids)\, Motivational Speakeasy contains evidence of a variety of influences. \nFolk fans might recognize Jordan Tice as a member of the instrumental bluegrass supergroup Hawktail\, as well as his sideman work with many other artists in the folk/Americana genre such as Dave Rawlings\, Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange\, Yola\, and comedian Steve Martin. \n \nAllison and Tatiana are both leaders in the young generation of roots musicians\, de Groot being known for intricate clawhammer banjo work with Bruce Molsky\, and Hargreaves bringing powerhouse fiddling to the stage with Laurie Lewis and David Rawlings in addition to teaching bluegrass fiddle at UNC-Chapel Hill. Their first self-titled album released in 2019 garnered attention from CBC Q\, Paste Magazine and Rolling Stone Country\, earning the duo the Independent Music Awards “Best Bluegrass Album” and a nomination from IBMA for “Best Liner Notes of the Year.” The duo has been booked at festivals and venues such as Newport Folk Festival\, Savannah Music Festival\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh\, NC\, and Red Wing Roots Music Festival. Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves create a sound that is adventurous\, masterful\, and original\, as they expand on the eccentricities of old songs\, while never losing sight of what makes them endure.

SUMMARY:Scott Hirsch
DESCRIPTION:You’ve heard Scott Hirsch’s work already even if you didn’t know it. He’s been the magic man behind so many records over the last couple decades-as producer\, engineer\, and multi instrumentalist. He is the ‘other half’\, the Yin to Mc Taylor’s Yang in Hiss Golden Messenger and their previous group\, The Court and Spark. He helmed the grammy nominated record by legendary folk singer Alice Gerrard. He’s worked with iconic California outsiders like the Mother Hips’ Greg Loicano and Orpheo McCloud. He’s also a master of film sound\, doing the mixes on a number of lauded indie releases including Hannah Jayanti’s documentary “Truth or Consequences”\, with a score by Bill Frisell. Hirsch is finding himself the nexus point of a burgeoning recording and arts scene in Ojai\, California\, the small mountain town where he and his family call home now.

SUMMARY:The Faux Paws
DESCRIPTION:From raging fiddle tunes\, to saxophone solos and unrequited love songs\, the music of The Faux Paws would be hard to pin down with standard genre descriptions.  The trio’s contagious groove\, and feel-good melting pot folk music has been honed over ten years of playing together\, and is the sound of three close friends (two of which happen to be brothers)\, who feel a musical kinship that transcends any stylistic limitations.   Now\, after nearly a decade of music making\, the bi-coastal trio are releasing their self-titled debut album “The Faux Paws”.

SUMMARY:AJ Lee & Blue Summit
DESCRIPTION:Words fail to express how delighted we are about hosting this show!\nAlthough falling loosely under the bluegrass label\, AJLBS generally plays sans banjo\, with Sullivan Tuttle and Jesse Fichman on steel stringed acoustic guitars\, AJ on mandolin\, Jan Purat on fiddle\, and Chad Bowen on upright bass – a configuration effectively used to create unique space and texture in the arrangements not as commonly found in the music of their peers.  Drawing from influences such as country\, soul\, swing\, rock\, and jam music\, the band uses the lens of bluegrass as a vessel through which to express and explore the thread that binds and unifies all great music.

DESCRIPTION:“As good a modern folkie as we have these days.  A voice perfect for the genre.  An understanding beyond the norm.”  –No Depression \n“He sings his heart and soul\, and in doing so lets light flood into your own… Truly one of Woody Guthrie’s children.” –RnR Magazine \nAlberta’s Scott Cook (www.scottcook.net) has been living out of a van or a backpack for a dozen years now\, touring almost incessantly across Canada\, the US\, Europe\, Asia\, Australia and elsewhere\, and distilling his experiences into straight-talking\, keenly observant verse.  His fourth independent release\, One More Time Around\, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award\, and its opening track “Pass It Along” won the Folk and Acoustic category in the 2013 UK Songwriting Contest\, with UK magazine Maverick Country naming him “one of Canada’s most inspiring and imaginative storytellers”.  His sixth studio album Further Down the Line won him his second CFMA nomination (English Songwriter of the Year)\, and comes packaged in a 132-page book containing a look back\, in words and pictures\, on a decade of full-time travel.  He’s currently touring in support of his seventh collection\, Tangle of Souls\, which comes in a hardcover book of road stories and ruminations\, both personal and political.  Cook is one of the hardest-working DIY troubadours on the road today\, averaging around 150 shows including a dozen festivals every year since 2007.  All the hard miles notwithstanding\, he still believes that songs can change your life\, and your life can change the world.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Slaid Cleaves
DESCRIPTION:“I tend to think of songs as the whiskey of writing. Distilled down to the essence\, powerful\, concentrated\, immediate. You can take it all in and really feel it in just seconds.”                           — SLAID CLEAVES \nWhen you ask knowledgable music fans for their list of classic American singer-songwriters\, it is a fair bet that Slaid Cleaves will appear on more than a few lists. The characters in Slaid Cleaves’ songs live in unglamorous reality. They work dead-end jobs\, they run out of money\, they grow old\, they hold on to each other (or not)\, and they die. With an eye for the beauty in everyday life\, he tells their stories\, bringing a bit of empathy to their uncaring world. \nHis songs are short stories – stories worth hearing.  We’re thrilled to have him back…it’s been a while.

SUMMARY:Rachel Baiman AND Viv Leva & Riley Calcagno
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Chicago\, Baiman moved to Nashville at eighteen\, and has spent the last decade working as a musician in a wide variety of roles\, from session musician (Molly Tuttle\, Kelsey Waldon\, Caroline Spence)\, to live sidewoman (Kacey Musgraves\, Amy Ray)\, to bandmate and producer. Fiddle music was her first love\, and she is known in the bluegrass and old-time world for her work with progressive acoustic duo 10 String Symphony with fiddle player Christian Sedelmyer. \nOn her new full-length album Cycles\, Baiman has found a grittier musical medium for her signature unabashed and defiant songwriting. \n  \nVivian Leva & Riley Calcagno’s self-titled record is old-soul roots music to its core. Though both just out of college\, the duo’s musical talents extend far beyond their years. Produced by GRAMMY-winning Cajun roots heavyweight Joel Savoy at his Louisiana studio\, Vivian Leva & Riley Calcagno(released March 12\, 2021 on Free Dirt Records) is not some soulless collection of songs imitating previous masters of American music. Rather\, the pair has responded to one of the darkest eras in American history with an album of stunning breadth and originality.

SUMMARY:Hillstomp
DESCRIPTION:Hillstomp is a 2-man band comprised of Henry Hill Kammerer and John Johnson. Henry plays guitar and banjo like a hurricane\, and if you close your eyes you’d swear he’s playing 2 parts at once. John Johnson beats mercilessly on his drums\, with the fury of a demon loose from hell. Once you get past the pure ferocity of his playing\, you notice the parts are intricately crafted patterns that provide the framework for Kammerer’s guitar and banjo sorcery. \nHillstomp sounds like a boom box blasting from a shopping cart. Two madmen have strapped an engine to the cart and it’s too big and running too hot. They’ve got a banjo and a megaphone\, a washboard and a kick drum. They’ve stocked the cart with guitars\, buckets\, car parts\, and microphones and they are hurtling towards a blown out bridge while the bad front wheel flaps manically. The fools think they can jump the bridge and land safely on the other side. They are very wrong but no one has told them because…well\, they just seem so happy. And there you are\, bouncing alongside them and deep down you hope they make it. Hillstomp is folk music in its purest form – from loud and gritty\, to intricate and poignant\, and most importantly\, always heartfelt and true.

SUMMARY:The Lowest Pair
DESCRIPTION:Happy to have The Lowest Pair back to play for us in February…it’s been a while.  Coupling great songs with a homey\, heart-felt demeanor\, they offer a unique\, engaging style \, even if that means two banjos!  See what others are saying… \n“Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee\, both playing guitar and banjo and trading vocals; hers an achingly beautiful distinctive tone that complements his smoky delivery to perfection.”\n– Americana UK\, The Lowest Pair at The Green Note\, London By David Allen \n“If you listen to no other bands or musical outfits in the Americana genre …listen to The Lowest Pair.”\n-No Depression on Fern Girl & Ice Man \n“…one of the best under-the-radar Americana duos today.”\n-Paste Magazine

SUMMARY:Clem Snide
DESCRIPTION:‘Forever Just Beyond\,’ Barzelay’s stunning new album under the Clem Snide moniker\, may just be the most miraculous of all his albums. Produced by Scott Avett\, the record is a work of exquisite beauty and profound questioning\, a reckoning with faith and reality that rushes headlong into the unknown and the unknowable. The songs here grapple with hope and depression\, identity and perception\, God and the afterlife\, humanizing thorny existential issues and delivering them with the intimate\, understated air of a late-night conversation between old friends. Avett’s production is similarly warm and inviting\, and the careful\, spacious arrangement of gentle guitars and spare percussion carves a wide path for Barzelay’s insightful lyrics and idiosyncratic delivery. \n“I look up to Eef with total respect and admiration\,” says Avett\, “and I hope to survive like he survives: with total love for the new and the unknown. Eef’s a crooner and an indie darling by sound and a mystic sage by depth. That’s not common\, but it’s beautiful.” \n  \nhttp:/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9xoR50c8Ss&t=23s \n

SUMMARY:The Deer
DESCRIPTION:The songs are spacious — airy vocals float atop lovely\, languid melodies and gentle percussion\, adorned with softly-swelling synths and thoughtfully-plucked fiddle and mandolin. It’s a sound that compels comparisons to both songwriting principals like Fleetwood Mac\, Neko Case or Mazzy Star as well as indie folk contemporaries like Jade Bird\, Haley Heynderickx\, or Shannon Lay. The Deer have formed a breed of indie folk entirely uninhibited\, all its own\, and absolutely captivating.. From Austin\, they are borne of a densely creative atmosphere\, and stand out with their versatile and accessible sound. Members include frontwoman Grace Rowland (The Blue Hit)\, upright bassist Jesse Dalton (MilkDrive\, Green Mountain Grass)\, guitarist Michael McLeod (Good Field\, Linklater film composer)\, drummer Alan Eckert (Dimitri’s Ascent\, A Live One)\, and string player Noah Jeffries (MilkDrive\, South Austin Jug Band). Frequent collaborator Roger Sellers (Bayonne) also adds some of his touch to their songwriting and production.

SUMMARY:Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley
DESCRIPTION:Take a 15-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Dobro Player of the Year and a Tennessee-born guitar prodigy who made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11\, and you have Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley\, a powerhouse acoustic duo that has electrified the acoustic music scene. \nOn their new Compass Records album\, WORLD FULL OF BLUES\, they move beyond the acoustic-centric sound of their previous two releases (including the GRAMMY-nominated BEFORE THE SUN GOES DOWN) and juice things up with Hammond B3 and a horn section. Guests include blues great Taj Mahal\, who provides his unmistakable mojo to the title track\, and country music legend Vince Gill\, who joins the duo on an inspired rendition of The Grateful Dead’s moonshiner song\, “Brown-Eyed Women”. \nWhite-hot picking and stone country vocals are still the driving force of the duo\, but now with added grit and a nod to the rootsier side of Americana\, all aided by the guiding hand of GRAMMY winning producer Brent Maher.

SUMMARY:The Quebe Sisters
DESCRIPTION:With over fifteen years of touring to date\, The Quebe Sisters have delivered their authentic triple fiddle and three-part harmony sound to the concert halls and festivals of North America and Europe. \nGrace\, Sophia\, and Hulda Quebe front an innovative Progressive Western Swing band of archtop guitar\, upright bass\, fiddles and sibling harmony. The Dallas-based five-piece presents a unique Americana blend of Western Swing\, Jazz-influenced Swing\, Country\, Texas-Style Fiddling\, and Western music. \n“We differentiate our music as ‘Progressive Western Swing’ from simply ‘Western Swing’ because we aren’t trying to sound just like Bob Wills\,” Grace Quebe explains. “Instead\, we continue his vision\, playing the style he pioneered in an authentic way by incorporating new genres and songs\, interpreting them using our own unique voice through Country instrumentation.”
