SUMMARY:Hillstomp
DESCRIPTION:Portland Oregon junkbox blues duo HILLSTOMP is infamous for digging through the dumps and forgotten backwoods of American music\, recycling traditional elements into a refreshing and distinctive brand of do-it-yourself hill country blues stomp. North Mississippi trance blues\, a bit of Appalachia\, and a dash of punkabilly come clanging and tumbling from assorted buckets\, cans and BBQ lids\, all drenched in rambunctious slide guitar. Somehow it works. \nDespite their homemade instruments and novel approach\, Hillstomp is no novelty act. \nHillstomp’s memorable live performances tap into a magic that cannot be rehearsed\, converting outlaws and traditionalists alike from skeptics into preachers. \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Curtis Salgado
DESCRIPTION:“Glorious and memorable… Salgado’s voice is center stage just as it should be. Highly recommended” – Blues & Rhythm UK \n“Salgado’s vocals are soulful beauty. Fresh\, unexpected\, authentic\, percolating…perfectly executed… simply delicious” – Living Blues \n“Salgado inspires chills. Upbeat and original…poignant and wise with a great sense of humor” – Blues Music Magazine \nIn total\, Curtis has won eleven Blues Music Awards\, including the B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year. DownBeat calls his songwriting skills “an impressive gift.” Billboard says Salgado’s music is “inspired and powerful.”  Now\, Salgado is back with Fine By Me\, the latest evidence of Salgado wielding his impressive songwriting and vocal skills to a wide variety of styles. His music has dashes of blues\, gospel\, R&B\, jazz\, funk\, rock ’n’ roll and soul at any given moment. \nBy his early 20s he was already making a name for himself in Eugene’s bar scene\, first as the vocalist/harmonica player of The Nighthawks\, and later as co-leader of The Robert Cray Band. Salgado quickly developed into a player and singer of remarkable depth\, with vocal and musical influences including Otis Redding\, O.V. Wright\, Muddy Waters\, Little Walter\, Sonny Boy Williamson I and II\, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Howlin’ Wolf. \nIn 1977\, comedian/actor John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House. During downtime from production\, Belushi caught a typically ferocious Salgado performance and introduced himself during a break. Once Salgado started sharing some of his blues knowledge\, a fast friendship grew. Salgado spent hours playing old records for Belushi\, teaching him about blues and R&B. Belushi soaked up the music like a sponge and used his new awareness to portray “Joliet” Jake Blues in The Blues Brothers\, first as a skit on Saturday Night Live\, then a best-selling record album (which was dedicated to Curtis) and finally as a major motion picture (Cab Calloway’s character in the film was named Curtis as an homage).

SUMMARY:The Lonesome Ace Stringband
DESCRIPTION:Back for Round 2! \nMasters of their trade\, The Lonesome Ace Stringband bring grit\, skill and abandon to Americana music\, bridging old-time\, bluegrass and folk traditions into a seamless hybrid of original material that is at once fresh and timeless. \nInstrumentation alone sets this Toronto-based trio’s sound apart: consisting simply of fiddle (John Showman)\, clawhammer banjo (Chris Coole)\, and upright bass (Max Heineman).  The spine-tingling harmonies and interchanging lead vocals only bring more magic to the equation. They’ve become festival favourites at Rockygrass\, Celtic Connections\, Winnipeg Folk Festival\, Merlefest and regularly tour the USA\, UK\, Germany and\, of course\, Canada. \nWith more than a decade of group music-making under their belts\, they’re releasing their fifth album\, a feisty and mighty collection of all-original material titled ‘Try To Make It Fly’ (October 13\, 2023). \nCall Lonesome Ace Stringband whatever genre you want – they are just unorthodox enough to be brilliant.

SUMMARY:Tony Furtado Trio
DESCRIPTION:Americana Roots via a multi-instrumentalist with a dizzying musical toolbox… \nTony is an evocative and soulful singer\, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo\, cello-banjo\, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor\, but that’s another story). \n“…true talent doesn’t need categories.”\n-Relix Magazine \n“…a major musical force without doubt. He has his black belt in voice\, bottleneck guitar and his banjo playing scares the crap out of me.”\n-David Lindley

SUMMARY:BLKBOK
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Detroit’s inner-city\, BLKBOK (born Charles Wilson IIl)\, grew up in a music-filled house. While his parents and siblings were all musically inclined little Charles could always be found walking his chubby fingers up and down the piano keys. His Mom had no choice but to nurture her baby’s keyboard obsession and by the time he was 8\, BLKBOK was an acclaimed piano prodigy\, winning statewide accolades and college-level competitions. \nWhen it came to music\, most of the kids he grew up with pursued hip-hop adopting rapper names. However\, it’s no coincidence that Charles chose the name BLKBOK\, which echoes that of one of the greatest pianists and composers of all time. The tag is also an apt reflection of the elements that have contributed to the artist’s identity and symbolizes his colorful journey from pop and hip-hop culture to his critically acclaimed\, neo-classical debut album Black Book\, and various Mixtape projects and collaborations. \nBLKBOK is no stranger to the industry grind\, having hit the road throughout his career as a lead pianist or musical director with artists including Rihanna\, Justin Timberlake\, Demi Lovato\, Cirque Du Soleil\, John Mayer and more. BLKBOK’s explosive and immersive live music performances engage his audience with his incredible talent and channels his experience from sharing the stage with the World’s biggest performers.

SUMMARY:Bourbon & Bellows
DESCRIPTION:Bourbon and Bellows is an acoustic 5-piece band from the Yakima Valley that plays New Orleans-style blues\, folk\, and gypsy jazz. Featuring accordion\, fiddle\, and three-part harmonies\, their music encompasses songs over a century old alongside new compositions that you could have sworn you’ve heard before on some old LP. Their songs are toe-tapping\, funny\, dark\, and just a little bit naughty. Formed in 2019\, B&B has weathered the current musical climate with a style that doesn’t fit easily in any category\, but is instantly accessible to anyone wanting to stomp their feet and sing along with good friends having a great time. They released their first album last fall and are playing all over the Pacific Northwest in support of it.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyVEttsCEg4&list=TLGGma0e7oTdKTAwMTA1MjAyNA&t=5s

SUMMARY:Kevn Kinney & Bobby Bare Jr
DESCRIPTION:A SINGER-SONGWRITER SHOWCASE ! \nKevn Kinney\nis the lead singer / songwriter of the Atlanta rock band\, Drivin N Cryin\, who recently celebrated the release of their 9th studio album\, ‘Live the Love Beautiful’\, on Drivin N Cryin Records. Since the band’s 1985 inception\, he’s released some spare acoustic records on his own\, often collaborating with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. \nMacDougal Blues\, released on Island Records in 1990\, announced the rocker’s arrival on the folk scene\, with the engaging title cut and nine more acoustic tracks\, produced by Buck\, and mostly played by his bandmates from Drivin N Cryin. \nThough often cited as a working-class lyricist\, Kinney cannot easily be thrown into the same bag as Springsteen\, Mellencamp\, or Dave Alvin. Instead\, his is a unique spin on class\, not urban yet not completely rural. \nKinney still continues to tour as a solo artist in-between dates with Drivin N Cryin\, and is known to help host the annual Christmas Jam in Asheville with Warren Haynes. Darius Rucker cut Kinney’s song\, Straight To Hell\, on his album When Was The Last Time. The Drivin N Cryin song was a major hit on their album\, Mystery Road\, originally released in 1989. \nBobby Bare Jr\nYes – he is the son of Bobby Bare\, but his own body of work is impressive.  In 1974 – Bobby Jr and his daddy were both nominated for a Grammy for the song “Daddy What If”\, written by Shel Silverstein.  At 30 – he led the roots-rock outfit Bare Jr and released several critically acclaimed albums. \nHis next band was the Young Criminals Starvation League – which included members from And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and My Morning Jacket.  He’s had a number of solo albums\, and over the last several years he has performed\, recorded and toured with Guide by Voices. \nThis show will be special.

SUMMARY:FANTASTIC CAT !!!
DESCRIPTION:THE CAT CAME BACK!\nIf you’ve been familiar with us for any length of time – you know it is RARE for us to have a band back twice in the same calendar year.  But these guys blew us away in February – they’re back in the area in September – they wanted to come back for another show and we said ABSOLUTELY!  Plus – they’ve got a new album out which is getting stellar reviews. \nThey’re songs are collaborative – mostly.  They feature different lead singers (mostly)\, different drummers (kind of)\, different bass players (of sorts)\, different lead guitarists (in a manner of speaking)\, but the chemistry among these four is producing some of the BEST pop music currently being made.  The last show sold out – DO NOT WAIT! \n(Only 8\,000 hours until they’re eligible for the R&R Hall of Fame!)

SUMMARY:Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle
DESCRIPTION:You know him.  You love him.  Well\, at least we do.  And it is always a treat to have Ben Rice and his amazing band perform for us at Brewminatti. \nAlthough Ben’s first passion was guitar\, he diligently hones his singing to best support his original tunes. Besides the technical exercises that build and maintain his vocal abilities\, he puts significant thought into what his singing conveys. In performance he strives to be mindful of the meaning behind his lyrics\, treating every song like a story and evoking the mood of what the story’s main character is going through. “I try to write songs that hold weight and meaning\, but my songs mean whatever they need to for whoever hears them\,” Ben says. “I want people to enjoy my music on their own terms.” \nIn 2023 Ben added horns\, vocal harmonies\, piano and organ to his lineup for a larger\, more energetic band that he calls Ben Rice & The PDX Hustle. The response locally and on tour has been electric – the higher-intensity presentation of Ben’s music brings audiences to their feet and makes it clear Ben Rice is a formidable artist with more career triumphs still in his future.

SUMMARY:Eilen Jewell
DESCRIPTION:One of our perennial favorites! \nHailed as “one of America’s most intriguing\, creative\, and idiosyncratic voices” by American Songwriter\, Jewell built her career the old fashioned way\, touring relentlessly with the kind of undeniable live show that converts the uninitiated into instant acolytes. Over the course of nearly two decades on the road\, the Idaho native has crisscrossed the US\, Europe\, and Australia countless times\, playing an endless series of headline and festival dates in addition to sharing bills with the likes of Lucinda Williams\, Loretta Lynn\, Mavis Staples\, Wanda Jackson\, George Jones\, Emmylou Harris\, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Rolling Stone lauded Jewell’s “clever writing\,” while NPR declared that she has a “sweet and clear voice with a killer instinct lurking beneath the shiny surface\,” and The Washington Post mused that “if Neko Case\, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band\, she’d probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell.”

SUMMARY:Griffin House
DESCRIPTION:Its always a good time with singer-songwriter Griffin House. \nAfter forging a loyal fan base through years of grassroots touring as an opener for acts such as John Mellencamp and the Cranberries\, House broke through as a national headliner in 2009 with an appearance on Late Night with Craig Ferguson and the release of his underground hit “The Guy That Says Goodbye to You is Out of His Mind.” \nThe music documentary “Rising Star\,” released on Amazon Prime in 2019\, chronicles House’s journey through the music business\, as he attempts to balance the challenges of life as a traveling modern-day troubadour with marriage\, fatherhood and sobriety.\nHouse’s music has been featured on prime time television shows such One Tree Hill\, Rescue Me\, Party of Five\, and Everwood\, and reviewed in magazines such as Paste\, No Depression and Rolling Stone. American Songwriter writes “if you want to be blown away by raw talent\, look no further than Griffin House.” His latest release “The Tides” is a five song EP recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Jacquire King and is set for release on Aug 29\, 2023. House will appear this year at Sisters Folk Festival and will continue his US tour in 2023-2024.

SUMMARY:Cristina Vane
DESCRIPTION:Born in Italy to a Sicilian-American father and a Guatemalan mother\, Cristina Vane has always had a tenuous relationship with identity and place. She grew up between England\, France and Italy\, and was fluent in four languages by the time she moved to her fathers’ native United States for university at 18.  Despite this\, (and perhaps because of it) she had no sense of belonging to any one culture or country.  What she did have\, however\, was an intense love of music.  Powered by her signature take on blues and rock\, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cristina Vane’s debut album\, Nowhere Sounds Lovely\, earned her praise from the likes of American Songwriter and Rolling Stone Country\, which deemed it ‘mesmerizing stuff’.  The 2021 release was written largely on a road trip across America.  Since then\, Vane has laid down roots in Nashville and had the opportunity to spend more time exploring internally.  On her sophomore album “Make Myself Me Again”\, Vane has found a way all the way around the country and right back to herself\, both musically and personally.  “I’ve been trying to peel back the layers\, to understand who I am\, and I think that process has translated to this record\,” she explains\, “The production is straightforward\, more minimal\, and a bit of a return to my rock roots but still paying homage to the music I’ve explored since then”. \nAfter graduating from Princeton with a degree in Comparative Literature\, Vane moved to Los Angeles where she worked at McCabe’s Guitar Shop\, and spent every free moment working on her music\, studying fingerstyle guitar with mentor Pete Steinberg. Those years pushed her into deeper exploration of country blues picking and old folk guitar styles. In the last few years she’s taken a deep dive into old-time and bluegrass music\, adding clawhammer banjo to her arsenal of instruments.

SUMMARY:Kimmi Bitter & The Westside Twang
DESCRIPTION:This one’s gonna be a hoot y’all! \nCentered around the vein of old-school country with a touch of the swinging sixties\, Kimmi Bitter and the Westside Twang are here to transport you on a retro journey into the year 1962 through their nostalgic original songs. Effortlessly navigating through country ballads in her mod wardrobe and love of white boots\, Bitter has drawn strong comparisons to Patsy Cline\, Nancy Sinatra\, and Tammy Wynette. “Immediately riveting classic country fans and stimulating chill bumps from the eerie similarities to Patsy Cline\, ‘My Grass Is Blue’ is solid country gold\,” says Saving Country Music who nominated the song for 2022 Single of the Year (read article) alongside fellow nominees Charley Crockett\, Sierra Ferrell\, and Zach Bryan. She also found recognition in her hometown winning Best Country/Americana Artist and “My Grass is Blue” was nominated for Song of the Year by the San Diego Music Awards 2023.

SUMMARY:Fantastic Cat
DESCRIPTION:They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY\, The Beatles\, The Traveling Wilburys\, The Highwaymen\, Monsters of Folk\, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway\, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated debut\, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a wildly satisfying collection of folk-rock\, country\, Americana\, and good old rock & roll\,” the album earned the vocal-trading\, instrument-swapping collective their national TV debut\, sold-out headline dates around the US and Europe\, festival performances everywhere from Sundance to Take Root\, and a song in the Paramount+ series Tulsa King. In 2023\, the unlikely four-piece collaborated with all-star producer Butch Walker on a 50th anniversary recording of Wings’ “Band On The Run\,” which prompted even more love from Rolling Stone\, who dubbed them “the Harlem Globetrotters of Americana.” \nIndividually\, each member of Fantastic Cat boasts their own impressive resume along with a litany of critical acclaim. The Guardian named Don DiLego “one to watch.” NPR said Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter.” Rolling Stone called Brian Dunne’s latest record “the sleeper album of the year” and praised Mike Montali’s band\, Hollis Brown\, as “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland.” Collectively\, though\, the four transcend their respective roots\, emerging as a velvet-clad rock and roll cooperative far greater than the sum of its parts. \nThey say some cats are born fantastic; others have fantasy thrust upon them. These guys are somewhere in the middle.

SUMMARY:Luke Bulla
DESCRIPTION:Luke Bulla has been singing and playing music most of his life. Touring with and singing in his family band from age four\, Luke took up the fiddle at seven. \nOver the course of the next few years\, he won the National Fiddle Contest (in Weiser\, Idaho) six times in his respective age categories. His seventh win came in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen\, making him the youngest to have earned the title at the time. Entering Nashville’s Grand Master Fiddle Championship at age ten\, Luke distinguished himself by being the youngest person to have made the top ten.  In addition to violin\, Luke plays guitar and mandolin\, and sings and writes songs. \nIn the spring of 1999\, Luke moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band\, Kentucky Thunder\, which earned him his first Grammy Award. \nFollowing the Skaggs stint\, he became a member of the John Cowan Band. More recently Luke has performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile\, Jim Lauderdale\, Darrell Scott\, Alison Krauss\, Jerry Douglas\, Sam Bush\, Edgar Meyer\, Bela Fleck\, Bryan Sutton\, Kevin Costner & Modern West\, Russ Barenberg Trio\, Shawn Colvin\, Tony Rice\, Chris Thile\, Peter Rowan\, Patty Griffin\, Glen Phillips\, Rodney Crowell\, and Earl Scruggs\, to name a few. Luke was also a perennial instructor at Mark O’Connor’s fiddle camps in his early Nashville years.

SUMMARY:Albert Cummings
DESCRIPTION:For someone with the kind of background Albert Cummings has\, his confidence about his new music says it all. This is a singer and guitarist who has played with many of the greatest players of the modern era\, and received the kind of awards and recognition that few others do. Raised in Massachusetts and self-taught on the banjo\, it was a 1987 concert by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble that opened Cummings to a new world of modern blues and inspired him to take up the guitar. It didn’t take long from there for him to find his way to the front of the pack. In fact\, Albert Cummings’ very first album FROM THE HEART (2003) was produced by Double Trouble’s Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon and included the group’s Reese Wynans on keyboards. That had not happened before Cummings’ release.

SUMMARY:Leslie Mendelson
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Leslie Mendelson is supporting her most recent studio album ‘If You Can’t Say Anything Nice…\,’ as well as a solo acoustic EP ‘In The Meantime\,’ that was recorded during quarantine earlier this Spring. Described by Relix Magazine as an artist with “a loyal\, cross-generational audience that hugs the hippie\, hipster\, coffee shop and society crowds\,” Leslie’s timeless musicality and evocative songwriting indeed cuts a wide swath. All Music writes that Leslie evokes “1970s songwriter influences in the vein of Carole King and Carly Simon\,” while The Aquarian declares she is “the closest thing one can get to a truly honest musical experience.” \nLeslie Mendelson’s previous work\, including 2009 Grammy-nominated debut album ‘Swan Feathers’ and 2017 album\, ‘Love & Murder’ dealt with matters of the heart. When it came time to compose the songs that comprise ‘If You Can’t Say Anything Nice…\,’ however\, she and her longtime writing partner Steve McEwan set out to examine the anxiety stemming from the current socio-political climate with songs like “Medication\,” “I Need Something To Care About” and “Would You Give Up Your Gun.” It’s fitting extension of a more socially conscious outlook offered on “A Human Touch”—Leslie’s duet with Jackson Browne for the documentary film\, ‘5B\,’ released in 2019. \nIf Leslie Mendelson’s only collaboration with a legendary musician was Jackson Browne\, it would be a worthy point to celebrate. What’s truly telling is that Leslie has also drawn the attention of The Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir who recorded a duet with her on Roy Orbison’s standard\, “Blue Bayou\,” while no less than classic rock royalty The Who invited her to open two shows at Madison Square Garden last year. She was set to open three more dates for the band in 2020 that were unfortunately postponed due to the pandemic. With some of rock music’s most legitimate voices seeking Leslie out\, it leaves no doubt the rarefied air she inhabits as an artist.

SUMMARY:Jim Lauderdale
DESCRIPTION:Two-Time Grammy Winner \n“Jim Lauderdale is a consummate entertainer\, a sharp dressed man as well\, a terrific songwriter and a great singer.”– George Strait \n“He’s my favorite part of Americana music” – Ketch Secor\, Old Crow Medicine Show \n“He’s a man of great style\, an exceptional songwriter and tremendous singer” – Elvis Costello \n“Jim Lauderdale could easily be called a renaissance man. He’s a great singer\, great guitar player and there’s no way you could miss his work as a songwriter.” – Ricky Skaggs \nAt any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 34 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft. \n\nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.”

SUMMARY:The Faux Paws
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED!  Unfortunately\, the band must deal with a family medical emergency\, so this show has been cancelled.  Tickets will be refunded! \n  \nThe Faux Paws have a problem. They’re a triangle band in a land of circles. Musically impossible to describe\, they don’t even fit into todays often hyphenated-genre world. No fan\, industry expert\, nor member of the band can seem to sum up this band’s sound in any kind of marketable way. They continue to remain a singularly unique outfit in the acoustic music community\, always on the fringes\, always memorable and with an increasing number of die-hard fans who feel like they’ve uncovered a secret. \nIs it bluegrass? Not usually. Old-time? Occasionally. Is it Celtic? Can’t quite say that. Is it Folk? Americana? Jazz? Singer-songwriter? None of the above\, but members of the Paws have deep ties to all of these traditions and blend their elements effortlessly to serve whatever musical idea is being presented. So what can we say? This band takes risks. They’re dynamic\, exciting\, sincere\, irreverent\, infectious\, and surprising. They move deftly between moods\, influences and instruments but always maintaining a “groove” that pulses through the music like a heartbeat (you may not always be aware it’s there but it gives the thing life). \nA Faux Paws live show is an explosive roller coaster ride that brings the audience along. Virtuosity on the fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar and saxophone\, sure\, but also vulnerability\, personal lyrics\, tight 3-part brother harmonies\, playful interplay\, intricately arranged details and soaring improvisations. With the considerable success and praise the band has seen since coming out of the pandemic the Paws decided to add long-time friend and collaborator Zoe Guigueno (Fish & Bird\, Della Mae) to their touring outfit on upright bass. Zoe only deepens the group’s already massive sound while freeing each member up for more creative expression on their various instruments.
